PHOENICIA, Orthosia. Tiberius. 14-37 AD. Æ 21mm (7.21 gm). Dated regnal year 4 (17/8 AD).

Estimate $500

PHOENICIA, Orthosia. Tiberius. 14-37 AD. Æ 21mm (7.21 gm). Dated regnal year 4 (17/8 AD). Laureate head left; LD (date) to left / Cult statue of Kronos (Baal?), holding harpa and wearing calathus, in cart drawn by griffins. H. Seyrig, "Ant. syr. 56: Ères pompéiennes des villes de Phénicie," Syria 31 (1954), 5; cf. Mionnet supp. VIII, pg. 262, 105. Fine, encrusted green patina. Extremely rare; only 2-3 specimens known. ($500)

RPC I pg. 644-5, cites the article by Seyrig and states that, as both specimens listed by him were too worn for certain attribution, "there is insufficient evidence to justify an entry for Tiberius's year 4." The present specimen confirms Seyrig's initial attribution, as the date is clear on the obverse.
